Prosecutors: Accused shooter at Shaw was angered by man walking dog

The 74-year-old man accused of shooting at another man earlier this week on Shaw University's campus appeared in court on Wednesday.

Authorities took Kamal Rasool Abdal-Rafi into custody Tuesday afternoon after they said he shot at a man four times near the Shaw University International Studies Center at 130 Martin Luther King Blvd.

In court on Wednesday, prosecutors said Abdal-Rafi was upset the man was walking his dog close to the King Khalid mosque, which is on the second floor of the building. Prosecutors then said he kicked the man's dog and fired four shots.

Abdal-Rafi was carrying two guns when he was arrested, and authorites found three more in his car.

According to the Wake County ABC Law Enforcement, one of their officers heard the shots while in the area on an unrelated alcohol call. A bystander directed him to the building, where he chased and held Abdal-Rafi until Raleigh police officers could take him into custody

Shaw University canceled classes for the rest of the day on Tuesday

WRAL News reached out to the university for comment. The university said they are referring any questions about the case to the Raleigh Police Department.

A judge set Abdal-Rafi's bond at $150,000 and said he can't return to the university or have contact with the victim.
